Necklace lengths

A necklace that fits correctly is barely noticeable. It sits where it should, doesn't interfere with the neckline, and you never need to adjust it during the day. If it fits incorrectly, it does the opposite—and then it just stays in the drawer.

Our chains are adjustable. Instead of a fixed measurement, you get a range, and you choose where within that range the chain should sit for the day. This means you don't need to get the exact fit right from the start, and the same chain works both with a low-cut top and over a thin sweater.

How the different lengths fall

The measurements below apply to an adult of average build. Neck circumference, body height, and bust affect where the chain actually sits, so view the table as a starting point rather than a definitive guide.

Length Where it falls Suitable for
40–45 cm Around the hollow of the throat and just below the collarbone The most common length. Visible against bare skin, works with necklines and open-collar shirts. Wears pendants meant to sit high and be clearly visible.
45–50 cm Just below the collarbone, towards the upper part of the sternum The everyday length that works as well over a thin sweater as it does against the skin. Gives the pendant space.
65–70 cm Middle of the chest Worn over a sweater, turtleneck, or blouse. Creates a vertical line and becomes a more prominent feature in the outfit than a short chain.
80–85 cm At the midriff The longest. Can also be doubled to two loops, which gives approximately 40–42 cm — two looks in the same chain.

How to find your length at home

You will need a string or a tape measure and a mirror.

  1. Place the string around your neck and let it fall where you want the pendant to sit.
  2. Hold your finger where the string meets and remove it.
  3. Measure the length. That is your length.

If you already have a necklace you like, the shortcut is simpler: lay it flat and measure from clasp to clasp, excluding the pendant.

Two things to consider. A pendant pulls the chain down a few centimeters, so it's a good idea to measure with something small attached to the string if the pendant is heavy. And if you're unsure between two ranges — choose the longer one. A chain that sits a little low can be worn, one that constricts cannot.

Thickness — the chain should carry the pendant, not vice versa

The thickness determines both the appearance of the chain and what it can carry.

  • 1.6 mm is the finer chain. It is subtly visible and leaves focus on the pendant. Suitable for lighter pendants and those who want something that almost disappears against the skin.
  • 2.0 mm has a more distinct expression and carries heavier pendants without feeling strained. It also works alone, without a pendant, as a piece of jewelry in itself.

As a rule of thumb: the heavier the pendant, the thicker the chain. A thin chain with a heavy pendant will strain the links at the attachment point and also hang less gracefully.

Silver, oxidized silver, or gold

All our chains are available in sterling silver 925. Silver has a bright, clear shine that suits most skin tones and ages beautifully over time.

Oxidized silver is the same material with a darker, matte surface. It gives a calmer and more raw expression, and highlights light stones and details more strongly than polished silver does. The surface gradually lightens with regular use, which many appreciate — the jewelry develops a patina that is uniquely yours.

18k rose gold has a warm tone that is close to the skin's own. Gold chains are available in 40–45 cm.

Multiple chains together

If you want to wear several chains at once, it works best with a clear difference in length — at least five centimeters between each, otherwise they will tangle and look unintentionally clustered. A common combination is 40–45 cm closest to the neck and 45–50 cm below.

Feel free to mix thicknesses. A fine chain next to a thicker one creates more movement than two identical ones. Mixing silver and gold is entirely possible and often becomes more personal than sticking to one metal type.

Frequently Asked Questions

What length is most common?

40–45 cm and 45–50 cm account for the vast majority of purchases. If you are choosing your first chain, 45–50 cm is the safest choice — it works both against the skin and over a thin garment.

What does it mean that the chain is adjustable?

The chain has multiple attachment points within the specified range, so you can choose where it should sit for the day. A 45–50 cm chain can therefore be worn both as 45 and as 50 centimeters.

Which chain suits my pendant?

Lighter pendants are best displayed on 1.6 mm. If you have a larger or heavier pendant, we recommend 2.0 mm. If you are unsure, we are happy to help — contact us or visit the store at Sankt Hansgatan 26 in Visby.

Can I wear a long necklace doubled?

Yes. The 80–85 cm chain becomes approximately 40–42 cm when doubled, making it two pieces of jewelry in one.

How do I care for my chain?

Store the chain in a sealed bag when not wearing it, avoid contact with perfume and cleaning agents, and polish shiny silver with a soft cloth. Oxidized silver should not be polished hard — the dark surface is intentional and will be removed by polishing agents.
